Srinagar, Mar 4: Just days after reopening, Thajiwas Glacier and Hung Park in Sonamarg have emerged as major tourist attractions, drawing large numbers of visitors and reviving tourism activity in the area.
Tourists from different parts of the country and abroad have started arriving at these scenic destinations in Ganderbal district. Local tourism operators said visitor footfall has increased steadily since the reopening of the two popular sites.
The reopening followed a security assessment conducted under the direction of Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha. Authorities recently allowed public access to 14 tourist destinations across Jammu and Kashmir after reviewing the overall security situation.
Sonamarg, often referred to as the “Meadow of Gold,” remains one of the most visited mountain destinations in Kashmir. The town, located at an altitude of around 2,800 metres, attracts travellers with its glaciers, lush meadows, and snow-covered peaks.
Thajiwas Glacier has once again become a major highlight for visitors. Tourists reach the glacier through pony rides and short treks while enjoying views of mountain streams and alpine landscapes. Many travellers were seen taking photographs and exploring the glacier’s surroundings.
Hung Park has also witnessed a steady flow of visitors. Families and groups have been frequenting the open green space to relax and enjoy scenic valley views. Photographers and nature enthusiasts have found the location ideal for capturing panoramic mountain landscapes.
Local residents said the sudden increase in tourist activity has brought relief after months of uncertainty. Tourism remains the backbone of Sonamarg’s economy and supports hundreds of families in the region.
Pony handlers, guides, adventure operators, and homestay owners had faced financial hardship during the period when access to tourist spots remained restricted. Many residents said the reopening has restored hope for stable income ahead of the upcoming travel season.
Tour guides said the number of visitors has been rising each day since the sites reopened and expect tourist inflow to increase further as spring and summer approach.
Hotels and guesthouses in Sonamarg have also reported a surge in bookings, with many businesses resuming full operations to cater to the growing number of travellers.
Officials said enhanced safety arrangements remain in place at the tourist locations. Authorities have strengthened coordination between security agencies and tourism officials to ensure a safe environment for visitors.
Tourism stakeholders believe the renewed tourist interest will help strengthen Kashmir’s travel economy. With pleasant weather and blooming landscapes expected in the coming months, Sonamarg is likely to witness even higher footfall.
The revival of activity at Thajiwas Glacier and Hung Park signals a positive start for Kashmir’s tourism sector and offers fresh economic opportunities for local communities.
