18,779 units installed across Kashmir 63,765 applications received ‘Monthly bills down from Rs 1,500 to Rs 300’

Srinagar, Apr 22: Srinagar, the summer capital of Jammu and Kashmir, has taken the lead in the region under the PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana by completing 5,000 rooftop solar installations, becoming the first district to cross this milestone.

Launched in February 2024, the scheme has seen 18,779 installations completed across Kashmir so far, against 63,765 applications received, adding a cumulative capacity of 68.5 megawatts (MW).

According to official data, 5,056 installations have been completed in Srinagar district against 9,536 applications, generating an additional 20.9 MW of energy.

Deputy Commissioner (DC) Srinagar, Akshay Labroo, who presided over an awareness camp on the scheme at Kashmir Haat (Numaish Gah), confirmed the completion of over 5,000 rooftop solar installations across the district. Speaking to the media, he said the installation of solar units would help consumers significantly reduce their electricity bills.

"Our main aim is to create awareness among people and encourage them to opt for rooftop solar installations," he said.

Citing feedback from beneficiaries, the DC said monthly electricity bills have come down from around Rs 1,500 to Rs 300, indicating substantial savings. Labroo said such benefits should be widely availed. "Since the scheme is voluntary, our role is to create awareness. However, we will ensure that no beneficiary faces any difficulty in accessing the scheme or related assistance," he said.

The DC said that, besides offering financial benefits, rooftop solar installations reduce dependence on coal-based electricity, which has an adverse environmental impact. Such initiatives contribute significantly to environmental protection,  he said and urged people to play their part in safeguarding nature.

Officials advised that consumers should follow three key steps before installing rooftop solar systems: assess their annual electricity consumption, evaluate roof suitability, and budget, for which the PM Surya Ghar scheme gives financial assistance of up to Rs 94,800.

On roof suitability, officials said a south-facing, plain, shadow-free roof is most preferred, followed by south-west, west, and south-east orientations, and consumers should ensure that vendors conduct a proper site survey so that solar panels are installed in a uniform direction for maximum efficiency.

Consumers were advised that around 200 empanelled vendors are currently active across Jammu and Kashmir, along with several national and multi-state vendors, following a consumer-oriented, vendor-driven model. "Consumers can register on the portal and complete the process independently. They receive all necessary assistance, including financial aid, through the platform," officials said.

The role of DISCOMs is primarily to create awareness about the scheme, which is being carried out extensively under the guidance of the district administration, while also handling grievance redressal.
