Ganderbal, Dec 14: SSP Ganderbal Khalil Ahmad Poswal on Sunday asserted that there would be zero tolerance for crimes against children, stating that the Ganderbal Police acted promptly in the Chattergul incident by registering an FIR, arresting the accused and booking others under relevant provisions of the POCSO Act.
Speaking to reporters at Kangan after the conclusion of the Martyr Rameez Ahmed Baba T20 Cricket Tournament, the SSP said that although the matter initially did not receive due importance at the local level, the seriousness of the crime became evident. “It is clear from the reaction of society that a heinous crime involving a toddler has taken place. This case was reported 10 days ago. On my directions, an FIR was registered immediately, and the accused was arrested,” he said.
Poswal further said that some people had allegedly tried to suppress the matter at their own level. “It was my clear direction to arrest the accused. We have also booked those who attempted to worsen the situation. Such cases demand utmost sensitivity. Money is not everything; what matters most is what is right for society and the safety of our children,” he added.
Earlier, referring to the sports initiative, the SSP said the Martyr Rameez Ahmed Baba Cricket Tournament was organised under the Civic Action Programme after a proposal was submitted to Police Headquarters seeking funds to meet the demand of local children for sports activities. “A total of 18 teams from 18 villages participated in the tournament, with around 250 children involved. The matches were played regularly over the last 10 days, and today the tournament has been successfully concluded,” he said.
He said the tournament was held in the name of Martyr Rameez Ahmed Baba to productively engage youth and encourage them to learn the game and remain away from social evils. “The event remained successful, and I congratulate all the organisers for their efforts,” the SSP said.
During the valedictory ceremony, SSP Ganderbal congratulated the finalist teams for displaying exceptional talent, discipline and team spirit. He reiterated that such events not only keep alive the memory of fallen heroes but also motivate youth to take up sports and positive activities.
On the occasion, trophies, cash prizes, medals and appreciation certificates were distributed among the winning team, Kunmulla Titans, and the runners-up, Bhat Brothers Margund, for their outstanding performances. The spectators appreciated the initiative and expressed gratitude to J&K Police for continuously engaging youth through sports and community-oriented programmes.
