Srinagar, Dec 20: Police said they have taken cognisance of a landslide incident that occurred at Khanpora area of north Kashmir’s Baramulla district on Friday.
Baramulla police said the incident was caused by illegal stone quarrying activities in the area, resulting in a sudden slide of debris and earth.
“The landslide posed a serious threat to human life and created apprehension of damage to both public and private property. Police team immediately reached the spot, assessed the situation, and ensured that no loss of life occurred,” a police spokesperson said.
In this regard, Police Station Baramulla has registered a case vide FIR no. 219/2025 under relevant provisions of law, he said, adding that the investigation into the matter has been initiated to identify those responsible.
Police said they remain committed to ensuring public safety and will take strict action against all those found involved in illegal activities.
Panic gripped Baramulla town on Friday evening after a portion of a stone quarry caved in at the Khanpora area. Thick smoke and dust engulfed large parts of the town, with several inches of dust accumulating on the lawns and rooftops of nearby houses.
Many locals alleged that stone quarrying in the area is being carried out illegally and urged the authorities to take strict action against those responsible.
