Qazigund (Anantnag), Dec 14: The villages of Nussu Badragund and Panzath, just two kilometres apart in Qazigund, are celebrating as two of their own have been selected in the auction of a national-level cricket league. Tabraize Ahmad Mughal, locally known as Asif Mughal, a batsman, and Majid Yousuf Sheikh, an allrounder, were picked by Delhi Superheroes and Ahmedabad Lions respectively for Rs 3 lakh each. Over the past few days, their homes have been bustling with relatives, friends, and neighbours congratulating them and celebrating their achievement. The Indian Street Premier League (ISPL) is a T10 tennis-ball cricket tournament that has rapidly grown into a major platform for grassroots talent in India. The third edition, set to begin in January 2026, features eight teams, including the new franchises Ahmedabad Lions and Delhi Superheroes, owned by prominent Bollywood figures. A total of 408 players from 101 cities participated in the auction, with franchises spending nearly Rs 10 crore to acquire 144 players for the season. Mughal told Rising Kashmir that his selection has brought immense pride to the entire village. “They supported me throughout. It is their hard work too. They stood by me when I struggled and lifted me again. I am very grateful,” he said. He added that despite the lack of proper playgrounds in the area, he was able to train thanks to friends who offered their land to build a wicket. Local boys would practice with him, helping him improve. “Three to four years ago, nothing like this existed, but today we have so many tournaments like the Bijbehara Premier League where players get real chances,” he said. Mughal said fitness and mental toughness are crucial for any aspiring player. “Consistency is key. Even India-level players can be dropped, so we must stay mentally strong,” he said. He said ISPL is a huge platform, and players who perform well here can even dream of playing in the IPL. “The opportunity is huge. Players have to take it seriously not just on match day, but in their approach and focus,” he said. He said he feels proud after getting selected in ISPL, but wants to go further. "I have to work twice as hard now to reach the next level and I dream to play for India," he said. Sheikh said his selection is a moment of happiness. “ISPL is watched by great cricketers like Sachin Tendulkar. I will give my best to shine there. The platform brings together players from across the country, and with the support of good people around me, I will give my best,” he added. Locals in both villages appealed to the government to provide proper infrastructure and playfields for young cricketers. “We don’t have proper grounds for our youth. Please help us so local talent gets a chance to grow, and more players can shine,” they said.
