Srinagar, Dec 13: The Food Safety Department (FSD) on Saturday said it has collected 28 egg samples for laboratory testing following reports of alleged adulteration in the Kashmir Valley.
Deputy Commissioner Food Safety, Kashmir, Ghulam Qadir Azhar told Rising Kashmir that the samples were collected over the past two days during a valley wide inspection drive launched in response to public concerns.
“These samples have been collected from various parts of the Kashmir Valley and will now be sent outside the Union Territory to different laboratories for analysis. We expect the test reports within 15 to 20 days,” he said.
Azhar said that strict action will be taken against anyone found violating food safety norms. “Action will be taken as per the provisions of the Food Safety and Standards Act (FSSA), 2006,” he added. He noted that checks to curb food adulteration will continue across the valley.
Earlier on Friday, Hilal Ahmad Mir, Nodal Officer, Food Safety Department Kashmir, told Rising Kashmir that the two-day inspection drive was initiated to collect egg samples from across the valley.
The J&K government has ordered an urgent investigation into allegations of adulterated eggs being sold in markets after concerns were raised by legislator Tanvir Sadiq regarding possible toxic and carcinogenic residues.
This is not the first such incident in the valley. In recent months, the department has seized thousands of kilograms of rotten meat, stale fish, and low-cost dressed chicken unfit for human consumption.
