Ganderbal, Nov 25: Authorities on Tuesday carried out a major demolition drive in Satrina Kangan area of central Kashmir’s Ganderbal district, where two illegally constructed buildings and a tin shed raised close to Nallah Sindh were demolished. The action was taken in strict compliance with the directions of the J&K Ladakh High Court, which has banned any construction within 100 metres on both sides of Nallah Sindh. The drive was conducted on the instructions of Deputy Commissioner Ganderbal. Teams from the Revenue Department, Police and other concerned departments took part in the operation, which began on Tuesday afternoon. Officials said the structures had been constructed without permission and posed a direct violation of High Court orders aimed at protecting water bodies. During the action, the teams razed all the identified illegal structures to the ground, sending a strong message to violators. The demolition operation was led by the SDM Kangan, along with the Irrigation and Flood Control (I&FC) BDO, Tehsildar Kangan and Kangan Police. Authorities said action has also been initiated against individuals who have raised illegal constructions not only along Nallah Sindh but at several other locations in the district. Meanwhile, some locals alleged that the demolition was selective and demanded that similar action should be taken from Wayil to Sonamarg, where they claimed several illegal constructions – including shopping complexes, hotels and restaurants – have come up over the years. Sources confirmed that several violations have indeed been reported along the stretch from Wayil to Sonamarg. The District Administration Ganderbal has once again appealed to the public to refrain from illegal construction and encroachment activities, warning that strict action will continue against violators.
