Srinagar, Apr 14: Police have arrested eight people for their alleged involvement in vandalism during recent student protests in Sopore. Officials said 25 more individuals have been identified and will be arrested soon.

During the protests, several vehicles belonging to locals, staff members and journalists were damaged. Parts of school property were also vandalised.

Police said strict action has been initiated against those involved in damaging property and disturbing public order. Teams are working to trace and arrest the remaining accused.

Authorities urged the public, especially youth, to remain calm and avoid any unlawful activity. They said the situation is under close monitoring.

The protest began on Monday at Government Girls Higher Secondary School Sopore after students alleged that a senior lecturer sexually assaulted one of their classmates inside the campus.

The allegation triggered protests, with dozens of students gathering within the school premises. They raised slogans and demanded immediate action against the teacher. Many students expressed fear and said they did not feel safe.

As tensions grew, protests spilled outside the campus. In the chaos, some miscreants took advantage of the situation and resorted to vandalism, damaging vehicles and school property.

Police intervened to bring the situation under control. An FIR was registered against the accused lecturer, who has since been suspended by the education authorities pending inquiry.

Officials said both the assault case and the vandalism incidents are being investigated, and action will be taken against all those found involved.
