Budgam, Mar 03: District Legal Services Authority (DLSA) Budgam, in collaboration with Boys Higher Secondary School, Khan Sahib, under its Legal Literacy Club (LLC), organised an awareness programme on dowry and allied social evils.

The programme also included a session on the rights, protection, welfare, and entitlements of senior citizens, highlighting the need to ensure dignity, security, and legal protection for the elderly. Participants were sensitised to the challenges faced by senior citizens and the legal safeguards available under existing laws.

The primary objective of the programme was to create awareness among students and participants about the social and legal consequences of the dowry system, while educating them about mechanisms to curb such practices. It also aimed to instil a sense of responsibility among the youth to stand against social evils and uphold values of equality, respect, and justice.

The session witnessed active participation from students and faculty, who engaged with resource persons through interactive discussions. The programme provided a platform for dialogue, enabling participants to better understand the social realities and legal implications of dowry and the neglect of senior citizens.

On the occasion, resource persons delivered lectures highlighting the multifaceted nature of the dowry system and its adverse impact on society. They elaborated on the provisions of the Dowry Prohibition Act, 1961, stating that the law prohibits the giving, taking, or demanding of dowry and prescribes penalties for violations.

They noted that what was once considered a voluntary exchange of gifts has evolved into a coercive practice, often leading to harassment, domestic violence, and dowry-related deaths.

The speakers also referred to the Supreme Court judgment in State of Uttar Pradesh vs Ajmal Beg, which emphasised strict enforcement of anti-dowry laws and the need for wider legal awareness.

In addition, the session covered the legal rights of senior citizens, stressing the responsibility of families and society to ensure their well-being. Participants were informed about remedies available in cases of neglect, abuse, or abandonment.

Through such initiatives, the Legal Literacy Club continues its efforts to promote awareness of legal rights and responsibilities among youth. The programme concluded with a vote of thanks, appreciating the efforts of DLSA Budgam and all stakeholders in promoting legal literacy.
