Asks PDP to answer for its record of repression, excesses, corruption, opportunism, duplicity; not rewrite it
Srinagar, Apr, 30 : The Jammu and Kashmir National Conference Chief spokesperson Tanvir Sadiq Thursday said PDP has a legacy marked by repression, inconsistency, and political duplicity that continues to erode public trust in Jammu and Kashmir.
Sadiq, in a statement issued from the party headquarters Nawa-e-Subha said that during the 2016 unrest under then Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti, the PDP government presided over what he described as “one of the most excessive and indiscriminate uses of force in recent history.” Citing official data, he said that within the first 30 days alone, nearly 1.3 million pellets and approximately 4,000 cartridges were fired, leaving close to 7,000 civilians injured, many of them with life-altering consequences.
He further asserted that the administration resorted to sweeping detentions, with nearly 10,000 individuals allegedly booked under the Public Safety Act during that period. “This was not governance; it was coercive statecraft driven by panic and a complete disconnect from ground realities,” Sadiq said, adding that the PDP’s actions reflected a doctrine of control rather than compassion.
Taking aim at the party’s institutional credibility, Sadiq pointed to a recent RTI disclosure tabled in the Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly, which revealed that the PDP had failed to depute polling agents during the Rajya Sabha elections. He termed this as “a glaring example of organizational decay and political non-seriousness,” questioning the party’s commitment to democratic processes.
Sadiq also criticized the PDP’s shifting stance on national issues, highlighting its abstention during the voting on the Triple Talaq legislation. “Such selective engagement underscores a pattern of opportunistic politics, where principles are sacrificed at the altar of convenience,” he remarked.
Drawing on historical context, Sadiq referenced the aftermath of the Hawal incident, noting that former Chief Minister Mufti Mohammad Sayeed had publicly praised then Governor Jagmohan , an act he described as “deeply contradictory to the sentiments of the people at the time.” He argued that such decisions reveal a consistent thread of political ambivalence within the PDP’s leadership.
Sadiq further said that any expectation of introspection or course correction within the PDP has proven misplaced. “The people of Jammu and Kashmir are politically aware and will not be misled by rhetorical reinventions. The PDP must answer for its record, not rewrite it,” he asserted.
