Jammu, Apr 10: Jammu and Kashmir Deputy Chief Minister Surinder Choudhary on Friday raised serious concerns over alleged illegal mining activities and administrative lapses within the Mining Department following a surprise visit to the Director’s office in Jammu.
Speaking to reporters, the Deputy CM admitted that illegal mining by various operators, including local contractors and crushers, is taking place. “There is no doubt that illegal mining is happening, and I agree with it,” he said, adding that his visit aimed to assess the ground situation firsthand.
Choudhary expressed concern over what he described as irregularities within the department. He revealed that certain officers who had previously been suspended or transferred over serious allegations related to illegal mining were still found posted in the office.
“I was surprised to see suspended officers sitting here. It raises serious questions about how such decisions are being handled,” he remarked.
He further hinted at the existence of a possible “lobby system” within the department that may be facilitating illegal mining activities. “It appears there is some kind of internal arrangement that is enabling such practices. What I saw today was deeply concerning,” he said.
Describing the functioning of the office as “mismanaged” and akin to a “fish market,” the Deputy CM said the intended impact of previous meetings and directives was not visible on the ground.
Choudhary assured that a thorough inquiry would be initiated. He said he would take up the matter with the concerned Secretary and, if necessary, seek support from the Chief Minister to ensure accountability. “There will be no place for illegal mining. If officers are found guilty, they will have to face action,” he asserted.
He also pointed to administrative challenges in the Union Territory setup, suggesting that certain officials exploit bureaucratic loopholes, bypassing departmental authority and undermining governance.
Reiterating his commitment to curb illegal mining, the Deputy CM said strict action would be taken against those found involved. “What I witnessed today is unacceptable, and corrective steps will follow,” he added.
