SRINAGAR, Oct 6: Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on Monday formally inaugurated the
69th National School Games at the
TRC Football Ground, Srinagar, by ceremonially kicking off a football, marking the official commencement of the national-level sporting event.
The opening ceremony witnessed the presence of several dignitaries, including
Minister for Youth Services and Sports Satish Sharma, Advisor to the Chief Minister Nasir Aslam Wani, MLA Lal Chowk Sheikh Ahsan Ahmed (Pardesi), Director General, Youth Services and Sports Anuradha Gupta, Secretary, J&K Sports Council Nuzhat Gul, along with other senior officials and sports administrators.
This year’s edition of the National School Games has drawn participation from
30 teams representing various States and Union Territories, with matches scheduled across
six venues in Srinagar. The tournament will feature competitions in
Football, Wushu, Taekwondo, and Table Tennis.
Addressing the gathering, Chief Minister Omar Abdullah underscored the unifying power of sports in fostering national integration, friendship, and mutual understanding among youth from across India.
“Sports build bridges of unity and friendship. I am delighted to be with you for the inauguration of the 69th National School Games,” he said.
“Though today’s weather may not allow for a long speech, it gives me immense pleasure, on behalf of myself, my colleagues, and the people of Jammu and Kashmir, to warmly welcome you all to this prestigious event.”
He assured participants of full support from the government and organising agencies, promising that every effort would be made to ensure their comfort, safety, and well-being during their stay.
“If you face any difficulty—be it a shortage of warm clothing or any other need—please don’t hesitate to reach out. We will do everything possible to make your participation enjoyable and hassle-free,” he added.
Despite the inclement weather, the Chief Minister encouraged the young athletes to embrace the spirit of the games and enjoy the experience.
“Winning is not everything; participation, teamwork, and sportsmanship matter most. I truly appreciate your enthusiasm in being here. I wish you all success, memorable moments, and great competition,” he said.
The ceremony also featured
a march past by the 30 participating teams, which drew applause from the Chief Minister and a large gathering of schoolchildren and spectators. The vibrant display of uniforms and discipline added colour to the rain-soaked morning.
Players, coaches, and team officials took the
oath of sportsmanship, pledging to uphold the values of
fair play, discipline, and teamwork throughout the tournament.
The 69th National School Games are being seen not only as a sporting milestone but also as a celebration of youth talent and national unity, hosted in the heart of Kashmir.
