Jammu (Samba), May 11: A leader of a political party, his wife, a senior photo journalist, a woman, two militants and two troopers were killed while four others including Superintendent of Police (Operations) and an army official sustained injuries in a 12 hour fierce gunfight between militants and troopers in Jammu’s Samba district which ended on Sunday evening, officials and reports said, while two militants were killed in a gunfight with troopers in north Kashmir’s Kupwara district.

Jammu, May 11: The political analysts here are viewing the killing of International Democratic Party (IDP) leader Hoshiar Singh and his trade union leader wife Shashi Bala by unidentified gunmen as a “political conspiracy” saying Singh was instrumental in organizing meetings of various separatists in the predominantly Hindu area of Samba.

Sodhi couldn’t click his ‘last shot’

ImageSrinagar, May 11:  Photojournalist Ashok Sodhi, 45, had to pay dearly for his urge to discharge his professional duty with sincerity.
Sodhi had reached the encounter site in Samba sector, 45 km from Jammu, with his colleagues this morning as the plains witnessed first militant attack after a gap of six years. However, fate had something else in store for him, before he could click the photographs of a house where militants were holed up, a bullet pierced through his head and he died before clicking the last picture of his life.

8 troopers killed in Doda mishap

Jammu, May 11: Eight troopers were killed when an army vehicle fell into the Chenab river in Doda district on Sunday, official sources said.  
They said a vehicle of eight Rashtriya Rifles was on its way to Doda town when it skidded off the road and rolled into the river at Ghat area in the afternoon.

Soldier commits suicide

Srinagar, May 11: A trooper shot himself dead in an Army camp in Ganderbal district on Sunday, official sources said.
They said that Sepoy Ashok Kumar shot himself dead with his service rifle around 3 pm while on guard duty at Kangan camp, 40 kms from here on the Srinagar-Leh highway.

Post marital problems on rise in JK
From 14 in 1999, cases registered at State Commission for Women increased to 353 in 2006-07

Srinagar, May 11: The cases pertaining to post marital problems are showing a steep rise in the State, the official data of State Commission for Women reveals.
Compared to Jammu, Kashmir division is alarmingly far ahead.
The Commission, constituted in 1999, had registered three cases in Jammu and 11 in Kashmir in 2000.
In 2001, the number of cases increased in both the divisions – 16 in Jammu and 23 in Kashmir.
