Srinagar, Sept 30:
“Jammu and Kashmir Police are waging an uncompromising battle on multiple fronts,” Director General of Police (DGP) Nalin Prabhat said on Tuesday. “The force is actively dismantling Pakistani terror networks, cracking down on narcotics trade, and promoting constructive youth engagement through sports,” he added.
Speaking at the closing ceremony of the 20th J&K Police Martyrs’ Memorial Football Tournament 2025 at the TRC Synthetic Turf Ground in Srinagar, the DGP reiterated the force’s unyielding stance against terrorism emanating from across the border.
“We are always after Pakistani terrorists, and this pursuit is constant and without pause. On the narcotics front, police are completely and diligently pursuing drug traffickers through strict legal action,” he said.
He said that 10 police-run drug de-addiction centres are functional across J&K and have already treated 207 addicts this year, nearly 200 of them as inpatients.
“Drugs are destroying our youth, and our fight against this menace will be as uncompromising as our battle against terrorism,” DGP said.
The police chief said youth engagement remained a priority, with nearly 1,000 children sent outside J&K this year to experience peace, development, and cultural diversity in other parts of India. “Keeping our youth on the right track is an integral part of policing,” he noted.
DGP Prabhat paid tribute to the sacrifices of the force, stating that 1,614 police personnel have laid down their lives so far, including four this year in Kathua.
He said the families of martyrs are the collective responsibility of the force, adding that Rs 1.7 crore had been disbursed in ex-gratia assistance, alongside additional relief from the Centre, insurance benefits, and bank-linked support.
“Beyond financial aid, we provide educational support, welfare relief, marriage assistance, and direct recruitment for dependents. This year alone, five next of kin were given appointment letters,” the DGP said.
Turning to sports, Prabhat said the football tournament was part of a series of events dedicated to martyrs, with a cricket tournament scheduled in Kathua this winter and another in Kishtwar. Police have also organised events like Jashn-e-Dal, Pedal for Peace, and peace marathons across the Union Territory.
He recalled that J&K had successfully hosted multiple national-level police championships in recent years, including the All India Police Hockey Tournament (2023) and Water Sports Championship (2024), and said the All India Police Judo Cluster will soon be inaugurated.
Highlighting the achievements of J&K Police athletes, the DGP said personnel have earned medals at both national and international levels. He cited a gold medal won by a constable in Birmingham, USA, and the prize-winning feat of constable Hansraj at the Ladakh Marathon.
Prabhat congratulated the winners of the Martyrs’ Memorial Football Tournament, thanking ADGP Anand Jain and his team for organising the event. He also acknowledged the consistent support of the Lieutenant Governor in strengthening the morale of the force.
“Our martyrs are our pride, and their families our duty. Whether it is battling Pakistani terrorism, confronting the drug menace, or building hope through sports, J&K Police will continue to fight on every front with equal resolve,” the DGP affirmed.
