Srinagar, Apr 07: Medical colleges in Jammu and Kashmir are grappling with a severe manpower shortage, with more than 4,500 posts lying vacant across faculty, doctors, and paramedical staff, as per official details.
The persistent shortage is affecting key institutions, including those in Srinagar, Anantnag, Baramulla, and Handwara, raising serious concerns over the functioning of healthcare services and medical education in the region.
As per an official document highlighting staff shortages in GMCs and hospitals, GMC Rajouri and its associated hospital have a sanctioned strength of 804 posts, including faculty, doctors, and paramedical staff. Of these, 495 are filled, while 309 remain vacant, including 62 faculty positions.
GMC Udhampur has a sanctioned strength of 242 posts, of which 183 are vacant, including 39 Assistant Professor positions. Similarly, the Trauma Centre Udhampur has 34 sanctioned posts, but only three are filled, leaving 31 vacant.
According to the details, GMC Srinagar and its associated hospitals are facing a total of 1,257 vacancies. These include 193 Assistant Professors, 102 doctors, and 980 nurses and paramedical staff.
The figures show that GMC Handwara has a sanctioned strength of 748 posts (gazetted, non-gazetted, and MTS), of which only 148 are filled, leaving 600 vacancies.
GMC Anantnag has 665 sanctioned posts, with 443 currently filled, comprising 223 permanent staff, 45 on deputation, and 175 on academic arrangement, while 222 posts, including 24 Assistant Professors, remain vacant.
As per the official figures, GMC Baramulla has a sanctioned strength of 482 posts, of which 224 are filled and 258, including 36 Assistant Professors, are vacant.
The AYUSH sector in Jammu and Kashmir is also facing a manpower shortage, with 226 posts lying vacant.
The document reveals that SKIMS Soura, the main tertiary care hospital in Jammu and Kashmir, is also facing a significant manpower crunch. Out of 2,262 sanctioned posts, only 1,040 are filled, while 1,222 remain vacant.
Similarly, SKIMS Medical College Bemina has a sanctioned strength of 1,167 posts, of which 774 are filled and 393 are vacant.
