Locals hopeful as CM promises reopening of tourist destinations in May
Srinagar, May 01: Residents of border tourist areas across Kashmir Valley are waiting for the reopening of several destinations that were closed after the Pahalgam terror attack. These areas remained shut as a precaution, which affected daily life and income in remote regions.
While the administration under the Lieutenant Governor reopened some locations in phases over recent months, several key destinations continue to remain inaccessible. Earlier this year Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, said that all tourist spots will be reopened in May, has revived hope among locals who rely on tourism.
Among the places still awaiting reopening are Gurez Valley, Tangdhar, Keran, Bangus Valley and other destinations. These destinations had gained popularity as summer hotspots due to their natural beauty and peaceful surroundings.
Residents said these areas once saw a steady flow of tourists, which supported small businesses and created local jobs. Since the closure, economic activity has slowed, leaving many families struggling.
People linked to tourism said they are ready to resume work as soon as formal orders are issued. Many had invested their savings in homestays, guest houses, and small services linked to tourism.
Majid Nazir, a local from Gurez said that before the closure, tourist flow was increasing and the sector was growing steadily. He said people are now waiting for official reopening so they can restart work and support their families.
Similar concerns were raised in other areas. Nisar Ahmad, a homestay owner from Reshwari in Nowgam said he had built a small facility with personal savings but faced losses due to lack of visitors.
He expressed hope that reopening will bring tourists back and revive earnings.
Residents believe these destinations have strong potential to attract visitors again. They said demand for offbeat and peaceful locations is rising, and areas like Gurez and Bangus can benefit in the coming months if access is restored.
