Srinagar, Sept 22: The General Officer Commanding (GOC) of White Knight Corps, Lt Gen P K Mishra, on Monday reviewed the ongoing anti-terror operations in the upper reaches of Udhampur, Doda and Kishtwar districts of Jammu and Kashmir, where multiple encounters with terrorists have taken place in recent days, officials said.
According to officials, a massive search operation has been underway in the Seoj Dhar forest, a rugged stretch connecting Dudu-Basantgarh in Udhampur with Bhaderwah in Doda, since Friday evening. The operation began after a soldier was killed during an intense exchange of fire with terrorists in the area.
On Sunday afternoon, another anti-terror operation was launched in the Keshwan forest of Kishtwar district following a brief encounter between security forces and terrorists. Though the terrorists managed to slip into the dense forest cover, the area was immediately cordoned off and additional reinforcements rushed in, officials added.
Lt Gen Mishra, accompanied by Maj Gen A P S Bal, GOC of the counter-insurgency force (Delta), flew by helicopter to Seoj Dhar on Monday morning to personally review the situation. He interacted with the troops engaged in the ground operations and was briefed about the challenges posed by the tough terrain, thick forests, and inclement weather conditions.
Security officials said that while there has been no fresh contact with terrorists after the initial gunfights in Seoj Dhar and Keshwan, the operations remain in full swing. Helicopters were seen conducting aerial surveillance over the besieged forests, while joint teams of the Army, Jammu and Kashmir Police and CRPF continued to carry out combing and search operations on the ground.
In addition to ground troops, drones and sniffer dogs have been deployed to enhance surveillance and track possible escape routes of the terrorists. The use of modern technology, including aerial reconnaissance, is aimed at ensuring that the hiding terrorists are located and neutralised before they can regroup or attempt further strikes, officials said.
Security forces suspect that the terrorists operating in these areas may have infiltrated from across the border and are attempting to exploit the difficult terrain to evade detection. Sources said the recent encounters are part of a wider strategy by terror groups to push terrorists into the Jammu region, particularly in forested areas of Udhampur, Doda, Kishtwar, and Rajouri-Poonch, ahead of the winter season.
Officials confirmed that the operations will continue until the last terrorist is neutralised. “The security grid is fully alert and determined to foil any attempt by terrorists to disturb peace in the region,” one senior officer said.
The fresh operations come amid heightened counter-terror measures across the Jammu region, where several infiltration attempts and encounters have been reported since the beginning of the month.
