Srinagar, April 28: The All India Medical Students Association (AIMSA) has written to Union Home Minister Amit Shah, urging immediate strengthening of security measures for doctors and healthcare workers, particularly in Jammu and Kashmir, amid rising concerns over safety in hospitals.
In a letter addressed by AIMSA Vice President Dr Mohammad Momin Khan, the association highlighted a growing sense of fear among medical professionals due to repeated incidents of violence. It said that doctors, who work under intense pressure and challenging conditions, are increasingly facing threats to their safety.
The association referred to recent incidents of assault at Government Medical College Anantnag, where doctors including Dr Ainul Huda and Dr Zamin, along with paramedical staff, were allegedly attacked. A similar incident involving Dr Mustafa was also reported at Government Medical College Baramulla.
Expressing concern, AIMSA said such incidents have created insecurity within the healthcare community and stressed the urgent need for protective measures.
In its representation, the association sought several steps, including strengthening security in hospitals and medical colleges, especially in Jammu and Kashmir; deployment of trained security personnel in sensitive areas; strict legal action and fast-track investigations in cases of violence; installation of CCTV surveillance and emergency response systems; and formulation of a national policy to safeguard healthcare workers.
“Ensuring the safety of doctors is essential for protecting the healthcare system itself,” the letter stated, while urging immediate intervention from the Centre.
