Srinagar, Apr 30: Member of Parliament from Baramulla Er Rashid arrived in Srinagar on Thursday after the Delhi High Court granted him interim bail in an alleged terror funding case to visit his ailing father.

He drove straight from the airport to SMHS Hospital, where his father, Khazir Mohammad Sheikh, is admitted and undergoing intensive treatment.

Eyewitnesses said the meeting was emotional. Rashid greeted his father and broke down during the brief interaction, drawing reactions from those present at the hospital.

Earlier in the day, hundreds of supporters and Awami Ittehad Party activists gathered along the airport road and outside the hospital to welcome him. The atmosphere remained charged yet orderly, with security personnel deployed at key points.

The High Court granted Rashid one week interim bail on humanitarian grounds earlier this week. It directed him to limit his interactions to close relatives and avoid media contact. Two plainclothes personnel from Tihar Jail are accompanying him during the bail period.

Rashid, who heads the Awami Ittehad Party, won the 2024 Lok Sabha election from Baramulla Kupwara by defeating National Conference leader Omar Abdullah. He has also represented the Langate constituency twice since 2008.

His temporary release followed appeals from several political leaders in J and K. Among them, National Conference president Farooq Abdullah urged the Centre to allow the visit, citing humanitarian grounds.

Meanwhile, AIP chief spokesperson Inam Un Nabi thanked the police and civil administration for ensuring smooth movement despite large gatherings. He urged party workers to maintain restraint, stating that the visit is purely humanitarian.

Doctors at SMHS Hospital said Rashid’s father continues to remain under close observation in critical care.
