Srinagar, May 7: The Jammu and Kashmir Road Transport Corporation (JKRTC) bus service operating between Uri and Srinagar has remained defunct for the last one month, causing immense hardship to commuters, particularly patients, students, and elderly passengers who rely on the service for their daily travel.

Locals from Uri said that the absence of the bus service has badly affected people dependent on affordable public transport to travel to Srinagar for medical treatment, education, and other essential work.

“The bus was a lifeline for many people, especially poor families, students, and patients visiting hospitals in Srinagar. For the last one month, commuters have been facing severe inconvenience,” said a local resident of Uri.

The bus usually departs from Uri at 8 am and returns from Srinagar at 1:30 pm. However, residents alleged that the vehicle has been lying defunct due to its poor condition.

Locals further claimed that most of the JKRTC buses operating in the Uri sector are in a dilapidated state and frequently develop technical faults.

“The buses are outdated and often break down midway. Instead of repairing or replacing them permanently, the department keeps making temporary arrangements,” said a government employee from Uri who boards the bus every day.

Residents also alleged that in the absence of the Uri-Srinagar bus, the department has been diverting buses from other routes of Uri, including Garkote, Nambla, Isham and adjoining areas, on a rotational basis. According to them, this has disrupted transport services in those villages as well.

“Whenever buses are taken from our routes, people in our villages also suffer. Students and office-goers are the worst affected,” said a resident from Garkote.

Meanwhile, Managing Director JKRTC, Abdul Rashid War told Rising Kashmir that the bus had been taken off the road for maintenance purposes.

“The said bus is under maintenance. However, we have already made alternate arrangements and allotted a new bus on the route,” he said.

War added that the normal bus service on the Uri-Srinagar route resumed from Thursday.
