Srinagar, May 3: The strategic Uri–Baramulla highway remained closed for several hours on Sunday after heavy rains triggered landslides in the Lagama area, disrupting vehicular movement and causing inconvenience to commuters.
Local residents said the landslides were exacerbated by the ongoing two-laning expansion work being carried out by the executing agency.
The sudden blockage of the road led to a complete halt in traffic, leaving dozens of vehicles stranded on both sides of the highway.
Following the closure, the Uri administration issued a traffic advisory, diverting vehicles through the Bandi-Paranpillan-Dachi route towards Uri.
Authorities urged the general public to take note of the diversion and plan their travel accordingly to avoid inconvenience.
“The Baramulla–Uri road was closed near Lagama due to a heavy landslide. Traffic was diverted as a precautionary measure to ensure safety of commuters,” officials said, adding that restoration work was taken up on a war footing.
Officials further informed that men and machinery were immediately pressed into service to clear the debris. After nearly nine hours of continuous efforts, the highway was reopened for vehicular movement.
However, locals expressed concern over the recurring disruptions on the route, alleging that landslides have become a frequent occurrence, particularly during inclement weather. They said the ongoing construction work has made the highway more vulnerable, posing risks to commuters and adding to the hardships of residents in the border town.
Residents have urged the authorities to take long-term measures to prevent such incidents and ensure safer and smoother connectivity on the vital road stretch.
