Records over 3.5 lakh visitors in 29 days

Srinagar, Apr 13: The month-long run of Asia's largest tulip garden, the Indira Gandhi Memorial Tulip Garden located in the foothills of the Zabarwan Range, is set to close for the public on April 16 after recording over 3.5 lakh visitors in 29 days as of Monday.

Director Floriculture, Kashmir, Mathoora Masoom, in a notice, stated that the garden, which opened on March 16, 2026, shall be closed for the general public on the evening of April 16. "As recommended by the Tulip Committee, the Tulip Garden Srinagar (Tulip Show-2026), which was opened to visitors on 16th of March, 2026 shall be closed for general public w.e.f 16.04.2026 (Evening)," the notice read.

Speaking to Rising Kashmir, Masoom said the garden will now be closed for the public as the bloom in tulips is almost gone. "People can visit the garden up to April 16 evening, and it will not open from April 17 onwards," she said.

She added that the total footfall of visitors till today has crossed the 3.50 lakh mark, with 100 foreign visitors also visiting the garden during the last 29 days.

The garden was formally inaugurated on March 16 by Chief Minister Omar Abdullah. A total of 18 lakh tulip bulbs, besides one lakh spring flowers like daffodils, hyacinths, and roses, attracted visitors to the garden this year. Nearly 8 lakh tulip bulbs were brought from Holland.

The Tulip Garden in the summer capital of Jammu and Kashmir earned a spot in the World Book of Records (London) as Asia's largest in 2023.

It is worth mentioning that the Tourism department was planning the Tulip festival as well as the Badamwari festival today at the respective gardens. However, officials from the Tourism department informed that the Tulip festivals could not take place due to the less bloom in tulips.
