Srinagar, May 04: Frequent traffic congestion outside Government Medical College (GMC) Baramulla is creating serious hurdles for the smooth movement of vehicles, especially ambulances, raising serious concerns among patients and attendants.
Locals said that the hospital road, which is already narrow, is frequently blocked due to wrong parking along both sides which is causing inconvenience to the patients.
Mushtaq Ahmad, an attendant, said the approach road is not smooth, while footpaths are occupied by shopkeepers and vendors, leaving little space for emergency passage.
“We don’t understand… this is a vital road connecting all areas of Baramulla to the GMC, and anything can happen at any time. There are always emergency vehicles, including ambulances and those remain stuck and there is no one looking after,” he said.
He said that even the pedestrians are facing challenges in walking through the congested stretch, as pathways remain obstructed by vendors and encroachments.
Adding to the concern, locals claim that not a single policeman is deployed on this crucial stretch to regulate traffic, despite the constant rush and the sensitive nature of the location.
Notably, on Monday, an ambulance carrying a critically ill patient was stuck for several minutes due to congestion outside the hospital. Eyewitnesses, who live near the hospital, said that despite the siren, the vehicle struggled to pass through the crowded stretch.
“This road is not an ordinary road; it is directly linked to saving lives. Even a delay of a few minutes can prove critical,” said another attendant at the hospital.
Patients and attendants expressed concern over the lack of effective traffic management in the area and urged the district administration to take immediate steps to ease traffic movement especially for emergency vehicles.
“Despite repeated complaints, the issue continues to persist, putting patients’ lives at risk and highlighting the urgent need for strict enforcement and better planning around hospital premises,” they said.
Senior officials at GMC Baramulla said that they have taken up the matter with the District Administration Baramulla multiple times but the matter remains as it is.
However, Deputy Commissioner Baramulla, Syeed Fakhrudin Hamid said that the district administration is charting out an extensive plan and taking measures to resolve the issue.
