Srinagar, Apr 20: Students from various parts of Kashmir Valley faced hardships on Monday as a strike by transporters disrupted public commuting, forcing many to walk long distances to reach their schools and colleges.

The strike was reportedly observed in protest against the proposed expansion of Smart City bus services to district routes, leading to a near-complete shutdown of public transport for the day.

Javid Ahmad, a student from Budgam, said the absence of transport severely affected students’ ability to reach their institutions on time. “Students, especially those from rural areas, had no alternative means of transportation. It became extremely difficult for them to attend classes,” he said.

Another student, Saima Jan, said that despite the government’s announcement of free bus services for women in Jammu and Kashmir, many female students were unable to benefit due to the unavailability of buses, especially in the rural areas. “Female students studying in schools, colleges, polytechnic institutes, and paramedical colleges faced a lot of inconvenience today,” she said.

While some parents managed to drop their children off at educational institutions, many students from economically weaker backgrounds had no option but to walk to their destinations.

The strike has once again drawn attention to the dependence of students on public transport and the challenges they face during service disruptions.
