Srinagar, Jan 25: Kashmir Power Distribution Corporation Limited (KPDCL) on Sunday said that around 60 per cent of electricity supply has been restored in Uri sub-division after four days of a complete blackout caused by fresh snowfall in the valley. Imran Latief, Assistant Executive Engineer (AEE), KPDCL Uri, told Rising Kashmir that power restoration work is progressing steadily. “Out of the 22 (11 kV) lines under my jurisdiction, 13 have been charged, and electricity is being restored accordingly in the concerned areas,” he said. Latief said that power supply has been restored in areas including Kamalkote, Salamabad, Jabla, Lal Pul, Nambla, Garkote and Boniyar. “Several higher-reach areas are still pending due to heavy snowfall, but our teams are on the job, and we expect to cover all remaining areas by tomorrow,” he added. However, residents of some areas of Uri town expressed resentment over the department’s failure to fully restore electricity in the main town even after four days. According to reports, dozens of villages in Uri sub-division continue to remain cut off from the tehsil headquarters for the fourth consecutive day. These include Nambla, Hathlanga, Charunda, Batgrah, Gohallan and Kandikallar area of Garkote. In Boniyar tehsil, villages such as Babagail, Dudran, Bernate and Chotali also remain inaccessible. Speaking to Rising Kashmir, Executive Engineer PMGSY Uri, Sajjad Hussain Shah, said that over 50 per cent of roads in Uri sub-division have been cleared so far. “Nineteen roads have been cleared, while work is in progress on 15 others,” he said. “We have been working continuously, but since it is hilly terrain, restoration of connectivity is taking some time,” Shah added. Executive Engineer, Roads and Buildings (R&B) Department Uri, Imran Ali, said that nearly 90 per cent of roads under their jurisdiction have been cleared. “Our teams are on the job to clear the remaining roads as well,” he said. Locals from several villages said snow depth has reached up to three feet at many places, making it difficult for old and outdated JCB machines to clear the roads. “The machines are old. The departments should deploy new machinery so that snow clearance can be carried out smoothly and without delay,” they said. Meanwhile, locals expressed gratitude to MLA Uri, Dr Sajjad Shafi, for personally monitoring the situation and taking swift action to restore essential services in the border town.
