Kargil, January 24, 2026: Deputy Commissioner (DC) and Chief Executive Officer (CEO), LAHDC Kargil, Rakesh Kumar, on Sunday carried out an on-ground inspection of Zojila Pass to assess the status of the Kargil–Srinagar National Highway after recent snowfall.
The DC reviewed road conditions and snow clearance progress on the strategic stretch from Drass to Zero Point, accompanied by SSP Kargil Nitin Yadav and SDM Drass Vishal Atri. The visit focused on evaluating the feasibility of restoring uninterrupted vehicular movement before another forecasted spell of snowfall.
During the inspection, Kumar said the district administration has already mobilised the required machinery, manpower and logistical support to ensure swift clearance of snow and prevent prolonged disruption of traffic. He directed concerned agencies to speed up operations and maintain readiness round-the-clock to reopen the road at the earliest.
Meanwhile, SSP Kargil emphasised coordinated traffic management on the Zojila axis, directing Ladakh Police personnel to ensure smooth flow of vehicles, timely issuance of traffic advisories, and necessary assistance for commuters travelling through the high-altitude corridor.
Officials highlighted that Zojila Pass has remained functional for an unusually long duration this winter, despite repeated snowfall spells—marking a significant shift from the traditional pattern when the pass remains shut for five to six months due to heavy snow accumulation.
The continued efforts to keep Zojila open are being seen as crucial for regional connectivity, essential supplies, emergency services, and economic movement, especially for Kargil and adjoining areas that rely heavily on the Srinagar route during the winter season.
