Reconstitutes cancer consortium to strengthen care, research
Srinagar, May 06: Amid rising burden of cancer cases and deaths in Jammu and Kashmir, the Sher-i-Kashmir Institute of Medical Sciences (SKIMS) Soura is mulling to propose setting up a National Cancer Institute and submit a detailed proposal to concerned authorities, as the premier institute reconstituted its Cancer Consortium for State Cancer Institute (SCI) at Soura to bolster multidisciplinary cancer care, research, and public awareness.
According to an official communication, the consortium will be headed by the Head of the Department of Radio-Diagnosis as Chairman, with representatives from key departments including Plastic Surgery, Pathology, Nuclear Medicine, Clinical Haematology, Surgical Oncology, Radiation Oncology, and Medical Oncology as members.
SKIMS said the consortium will work towards developing an ambitious proposal for a National Cancer Institute and submit it to relevant authorities. The move comes in view of the growing burden of cancer and the pressing need for a coordinated, multi-specialty approach to prevention, diagnosis, treatment, and palliative care.
The cancer consortium will play a central role in strengthening comprehensive cancer care by integrating various specialties and developing effective treatment strategies. It has been tasked to facilitate cancer research, data collection, and epidemiological studies to better understand disease patterns in the region.
Headed by heads of multiple departments, the consortium will also oversee the functioning of the multidisciplinary tumour board at SKIMS to ensure coordinated decision-making in complex cancer cases.
The communication further stated that the consortium will review national and international guidelines and adapt them to create locally relevant and feasible protocols for cancer management. It will also recommend standard procedures for investigations and treatment of cancer patients.
In addition, the consortium has been tasked with forging partnerships through MoUs and collaborations with government agencies and non-governmental organizations to enhance cancer care services. Emphasizing community engagement, SKIMS said the consortium will organize outreach campaigns focusing on awareness, prevention, and early detection of cancer, while also driving research programs tailored to regional healthcare needs.
