Accused were involved in disrupting public peace:Police
Srinagar, April 24: Police in north Kashmir’s Sopore have booked six miscreants under the Public Safety Act (PSA) for their involvement in recent law and order disturbances and acts of vandalism during a student protest.
According to police, the action follows disturbances that broke out earlier this month. Authorities said the six individuals were involved in damaging property and disrupting public peace during protests. All of them have been shifted to District Jail Bhaderwah, while more suspects are under watch.
The detainees have been identified as Umar Akbar Hajam of Seelu, Salman Ahmed Shala of Shalpora, Altaf Ahmed Sheikh of Panzipora Tarzoo, Mubashir Ahmed Gilkar of Naseerabad, Muzammil Mushtaq Changa of Arampora, and Majid Firdous Dar of Chinkipora.
Police said the situation escalated after allegations surfaced against a senior lecturer at Government Girls Higher Secondary School Sopore. A student accused the teacher of sexual harassment, which triggered anger among students and parents.
Soon after the complaint, the teacher was suspended and a formal case was registered. However, the issue led to protests in parts of Sopore, with students taking to the streets and demanding strict action.
Senior Superintendent of Police Sopore, Iftikhar Talib, said the police acted quickly to control the situation and prevent further escalation. He said a fair investigation is underway and assured that the law will take its course.
Officials said the preventive detentions were carried out to maintain public order and avoid any repeat of unrest. They added that more action could follow as investigations continue.
