Srinagar, Feb 19; The Jammu and Kashmir Waqf Board on Thursday said the sanctity of the Hazratbal Shrine and the sentiments of devotees remain its top priorities, asserting that the religious site is a symbol of faith for millions.
The Board issued a statement in response to recent remarks by National Conference (NC) MLA Zadibal Tanvir Sadiq concerning the reconstruction and beautification of Dargah Hazratbal.
The Waqf Board clarified that all renovation activities, including the installation of new chandeliers and other beautification works, are carried out with reverence and responsibility. “The decision to replace the chandelier in the main sanctum was made after thorough assessment of structural safety, preservation needs, and aesthetic harmony, with the new fixture inscribed with Quranic Ayaat to enhance the spiritual ambiance,” it said.
The Board assured that no historical or sentimental items have been discarded. It said that old fixtures, including the previous chandelier, have been preserved and stored securely, in accordance with established procedures. “Nothing of value has been lost,” it added.
Acknowledging the right of elected representatives to voice concerns, the Waqf Board appealed for sensitivity in matters related to religious institutions, saying, “Dargah Hazratbal is more than just a structure; it is a symbol of faith for millions.” It called for unity, respect, and collective responsibility in discussions about its upkeep.
Without engaging in direct confrontation, the Waqf Board expressed hope that such issues do not become political battlegrounds. “Faith binds people together. It must remain above divisions and debates,” it said, adding that the Board is committed to safeguarding the spiritual legacy of Hazratbal while continuing necessary improvements with transparency and sincerity.
