Srinagar, May 04:- Rafting activity in Sonamarg and Pahalgam is set to resume after May 7, bringing fresh momentum to adventure tourism in Kashmir.
A tourism official said the decision has been cleared, subject to weather conditions, and all necessary arrangements are being put in place.
A senior tourism official told Rising Kashmir that preparations are underway to ensure safe and smooth operations. “We have given approval for rafting in both locations. Safety protocols are being strengthened so that visitors can enjoy the experience without risk,” the tourism official said.
Authorities are focusing on trained guides, proper equipment, and rescue mechanisms. River routes are being reviewed to avoid any mishaps. The tourism official added that coordination between local agencies and tourism departments is being tightened.
In Sonamarg, plans are also in motion for a major rafting event in the coming months. The event is expected to attract both domestic and international adventure seekers. Local stakeholders believe it can position the area as a key rafting destination in North India.
Residents and tourism players have welcomed the move. “Rafting brings a different kind of tourist. These visitors stay longer and spend more,” said a local hotel owner in Sonamarg. Another resident in Pahalgam said, “This will create jobs for youth as guides, drivers, and support staff.”
Tourism experts say adventure activities like rafting help diversify Kashmir’s tourism sector. Instead of short visits, tourists engage in experiences that extend their stay. This increases revenue for hotels, transport operators, and local businesses.
With improved safety measures and organized events, rafting in these twin destinations is expected to draw steady footfall. If weather remains favorable, the tourism official expects a strong start to the season, boosting the Valley’s tourism economy in the coming months.
