Sonamarg, May 6: Authorities in Sonamarg have launched a fresh crackdown on unregulated tourist activities, with a special focus on traffic congestion and environmental concerns in the picturesque destination.
In a coordinated move, the Sonamarg Development Authority (SDA) conducted a detailed field inspection on Wednesday to assess ground realities and tighten enforcement against violations affecting the area’s fragile ecosystem.
The drive was led by SDA Chief Executive Officer Bilal Mukhtar and witnessed the participation of officials from the Tourist Police, the Authority’s Accounts wing, and field staff. Teams conducted on-ground assessments at key locations, identifying violations linked to unregulated pony operations and illegal vehicle parking, particularly along the Srinagar-Leh National Highway.
Officials said the unchecked movement of ponies and vehicles has been contributing to traffic congestion and environmental degradation in the tourist hotspot, prompting the Authority to step up enforcement measures.
During the inspection, directions were issued for strict adherence to designated routes for ponies and regulated parking zones for vehicles. Field staff were instructed to maintain constant vigil in coordination with concerned departments to prevent violations.
The CEO stressed zero tolerance towards activities that disrupt traffic flow, harm the environment, or inconvenience visitors. “Any violation will be dealt with firmly,” he said, underlining the Authority’s commitment to maintaining ecological balance and ensuring a safe, regulated environment for tourists.
The SDA has also indicated that such inspection drives will now be conducted regularly as part of a broader strategy to preserve Sonamarg’s natural beauty while enhancing the overall visitor experience.
