26% below normal precipitation recorded, Shopian worst hit at 71%

Srinagar, May 07: Despite recent back-to-back wet spells, Jammu and Kashmir has continued to witness lower precipitation than normal in the ongoing season from March 1, 2026, recording a deficit rainfall of 26 per cent till May 6, according to data accessed by Rising Kashmir.

Against the normal precipitation of 267.6 mm, the region has recorded only 198.8 mm of rainfall from March 1 to May 6, 2026.

The highest deficit has been recorded in Shopian at 71 per cent, followed by Kathua at 62 per cent. The majority of stations, including Srinagar, the summer capital, recorded deficit rainfall between 20 per cent and 59 per cent during the period. Srinagar recorded 170.9 mm against the normal of 219.7 mm.

Other stations with deficit rainfall include Anantnag, Budgam, Baramulla, Doda, Jammu, Kishtwar, Kulgam, Pulwama, Ramban, and Udhampur.

However, Baramulla, Ganderbal, Kupwara, Rajouri, and Reasi recorded near-normal precipitation. Samba and Poonch recorded above-normal rainfall at 49 per cent and 41 percent respectively.

The decline in rainfall continues across Jammu and Kashmir for several seasons. In the recent winter season (December 2025 to February 2026), the region recorded its seventh straight winter rainfall deficit, ending at a massive 65 per cent deficit departure from normal, receiving just 100.6 mm of precipitation against a normal of 284.9 mm.

The persistent rainfall deficit may lead to a water crisis in the coming months, as water levels in rivers and streams have also gone down.

Pertinently, the weatherman has predicted a brief spell of rain from May 9.
