Srinagar, Feb 18: Pahalgam Development Authority (PDA) has imposed an immediate ban on the carrying and use of polythene and other non-biodegradable plastic items across all areas falling under its jurisdiction, declaring them polythene-free zones.
The order, issued by Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Mir Nasrool Hilal Jeri (JKAS), comes in view of widespread littering in rivers, forests, parks, marketplaces and residential areas in the tourist town of Pahalgam.
According to the official order, authorities have observed rampant disposal of plastic waste such as water bottles, chips packets, plastic bags, plastic crockery and canned drinks at tourist hotspots, river banks and along the yatra route.
The PDA said such waste poses serious environmental hazards and threatens both human and animal lives.
“The devastating impact of non-biodegradable substances on the fragile environment of Pahalgam cannot be ignored. There is an urgent need to promote eco-friendly tourism and preserve the natural beauty of the area,” the order reads.
Under the new directive, carrying and using plastic bags, chips covers, plastic bottles, plastic crockery items and canned drinks has been strictly prohibited at all tourist spots, parks, streams, forest areas, residential and commercial establishments, religious places and along the yatra route within PDA limits.
The authority has warned that any violation of the order will be dealt with strictly as per the rules. Continuous violations may lead to cancellation of the registration certificate issued by the Jammu and Kashmir Tourism Department.
In addition, any person found littering or dumping banned plastic and other non-biodegradable items in the notified areas will face an on-the-spot fine of Rs 2,000.
