Srinagar, Feb 19: The Government of J&K has stated that there is no proposal under consideration for establishing a separate maternity hospital in Kupwara district. The reply came from the Health and Medical Education Department, in response to a Question raised by Mir Mohammad Fayaz. He had asked whether the government intends to establish a maternity hospital in Kupwara considering its geographical location. He also sought to know the timeline or reasons if no such plan exists. In its written reply, the department stated that at present there is no such proposal for setting up a separate maternity hospital in Kupwara. It said maternity healthcare needs in the district are being addressed through existing institutions at both tertiary and secondary levels. These include GMC Handwara and its associated hospital, SDH Kupwara, SDH Tangdar and SDH Sogam. The department added that these facilities are being strengthened from time to time in terms of infrastructure, equipment, manpower and other essential services. The upgrades are being carried out under schemes such as Capex Budget, Centrally Sponsored Schemes, National Health Mission and digital interventions in a phased manner. On a related issue, the MLA had also asked whether it is a fact that construction of the Community Health Centre building at Kalaroos was started four years ago and is still incomplete. He sought reasons for the delay and action taken to fix responsibility. The government replied that no Community Health Centre has been sanctioned at Kalaroos Kupwara. However, it said construction of a Health Centre at NTPHC Kalaroos Kupwara was approved at a cost of Rs 199.00 lakh under the UT Capex Budget. It said that after allotment of work, execution could not commence due to land issues with locals, which took substantial time to resolve. The matter was later settled to facilitate the start of construction. The department informed that the project now stands completed up to ground floor slab level with an expenditure of Rs 58.31 lakh. The Health Centre is targeted for completion during the upcoming financial year 2026 to 27.
