Says farmers at risk ahead of paddy season amid canal blockages
Srinagar, Apr 04: Jammu and Kashmir Peoples Democratic Party on Saturday held a series of workers’ meetings at Pohru, BK Pora and Bugam–Batpora in the Chadoora constituency, led by senior party leader Zaffer Mir (Lasjan), where key public issues and organisational matters were discussed, along with efforts to strengthen grassroots mobilisation ahead of the Panchayati Raj elections.
Addressing the gathering at Pohru, Zaffer said the failure of the NC-led government stands exposed on the ground.
“This government has proven to be a complete administrative failure. Ground realities have stripped away every claim made to the people,” he said.
He criticised the administration for failing to correct flawed revenue settlement records in Halqa Pohru, stating that the inaction has fuelled disputes among residents.
“These errors did not appear overnight. The administration has been warned, representations have been made, and nothing has moved,” Zaffer said, adding that timely intervention could have prevented serious consequences.
Zaffer also criticised the Irrigation Department, saying canals remain blocked and encroached upon, leaving farmers vulnerable ahead of the paddy cultivation season.
“Farmers are facing serious challenges because canals that should have been cleared remain blocked. Encroachments have been allowed to continue unchecked,” he said, referring to the stretch from Rakhishalina to Pohru and calling for immediate clearance and action.
At Bugam–Batpora, the issue of drinking water dominated the meeting, with locals expressing resentment over the failure of the PHE and Jal Shakti Department to address the crisis despite repeated representations.
Zaffer termed the situation “institutional apathy and administrative indifference.” “People are without adequate drinking water and repeated representations have not been addressed,” he said, adding that he would take up the matter with the Chief Engineer PHE and the Secretary, Jal Shakti Department.
The demand for an additional polling booth at Bugam–Batpora was also raised, with concerns over accessibility for voters. Zaffer said he would lead a deputation to the Deputy Commissioner Budgam to press for its approval.
Across the meetings, Zaffer reiterated the need for sustained grassroots engagement, with the party intensifying outreach ahead of the Panchayati Raj elections.
