Srinagar, Apr 09: An alleged shortage of LPG cylinders across many schools in Kashmir has disrupted the Mid-Day Meal scheme in several institutions, leaving students without cooked meals and raising concern among parents and teachers.

Scores of teachers from different areas of the Valley talking to Rising Kashmir, claimed the 'absence of LPG has forced them to halt meal preparation'. The problem, as learnt, is more severe in rural areas, where electricity supply remains unreliable, making it difficult to use alternative cooking methods.

“We have no LPG, and there is hardly any electricity in our village. We had no option but to stop the Mid-Day Meals,” a teacher from north Kashmir’s Handwara said.

Teachers from north and south Kashmir, especially in remote villages, claimed they have been waiting for fresh LPG supplies for weeks. Many claimed they contacted local gas distributors, who assured them of deliveries, but no cylinders have reached the schools so far.

Officials from the Education Department acknowledged the issue and said efforts are underway to arrange LPG cylinders. “We are looking into the matter and working on ensuring timely supply to schools,” an official said.

Teachers, however, expressed frustration over the delay. They urged the government to direct LPG distributors to prioritise schools so that the Mid-Day Meal scheme can resume without further disruption.

The shortage has persisted over the past month despite repeated claims by the administration that sufficient LPG stock is available across the Valley, leading to confusion and concern among stakeholders.

LPG distributors, on their part, blamed panic buying by consumers for the shortage. They said some households are purchasing cylinders meant for several months at once, which has disturbed the supply chain.

“People are buying LPG for three to six months in advance. This is creating an artificial shortage,” a distributor said, appealing to consumers to avoid hoarding.

Parents have also voiced concern over the suspension of Mid-Day Meals, which many children depend on. They said the government must act quickly to restore the scheme and ensure that essential supplies reach schools without delay.
