· Release wages on time or wind-up MDM in schools: Kupwara School cooks to CM
Srinagar, Mar 31: Kupwara school cooks hit the streets on Tuesday stating Rs 30 a day amid rising inflation is unlivable, urging the government to ensure regular wages or shut the Mid-Day Meal (MDM) scheme in schools. “When ministers struggle to manage daily needs despite earning lakhs, how can we meet our needs with just Rs 30 a day,” said a group of cooks working in Education Department in Kupwara, during a protest at Chinar Park, Handwara. Demanding regular wages and implementation of the Minimum Wages Act, they urged the government to either wind up the MDM
scheme in schools or ensure they are paid regular wages. Protesting women cooks said they get Rs 30 a day and can’t survive on the meagre amount in today’s times. They urged Chief Minister, Omar Abdullah and Minister for Health and School Education, Sakeena Itoo to fulfil their promises made during the elections. Rifat, District President CPWs Kupwara, said they have been protesting for almost one year but their demands are still not fulfilled. “The main issue is that salaries are not paid on time and the pending or remaining payments should be released. We also have to
give our children education and manage domestic expenses. We have no other source of income on which we can survive,” they said. The women cooks said they remain engaged throughout the day in schools, preparing mid-day meals for children. “Many of us are widows. How can we manage daily needs? We have been left at the mercy of God and nobody is listening to us,” they said. The protesting women questioned that when the Central Government allocates crores for mid-day meals in schools across Jammu and Kashmir, why they are not paid fair and adequate wages.
