Srinagar, Feb 06: Mirwaiz-e-Kashmir Dr Molvi Muhammad Umar Farooq on Friday expressed deep grief and anguish over the devastating fire incident in Shahampora, in the vicinity of Jama Masjid, in which 12 residential houses were gutted, leaving several families homeless in the harsh winter, and the fire incident in Chattabal area, in which also many houses were gutted.
Addressing the Friday congregation at Jama Masjid, Mirwaiz said. "During winter, unfortunately, there is a rise in fire incidents across the city, causing suffering to people. The residents must exercise greater caution, especially during the winter months when the use of heating devices increases the risk of fire hazards."
He said the concerned departments, particularly the Fire & Emergency Services, must be better prepared to deal with such emergencies in densely populated areas like Shahr-e-Khaas.
Referring to last Thursday's incident, Mirwaiz said the fire brigades reportedly ran out of water, and many fire hydrants in the locality were found to be non-functional. He called for regular inspections and maintenance of fire hydrants to ensure they remain operational at all times.
Mirwaiz appreciated the courage and dedication of the firemen who risk their lives to save people and property, but remarked that without proper equipment and adequate water supply, their efforts are severely hampered. He noted that water had to be drawn from the fountain of Jama Masjid, which eventually helped in bringing the fire under control.
After Friday prayers, Mirwaiz visited the affected area, met with the victims, and expressed solidarity with the distressed families. He assured them of all possible support and assistance during this difficult time.
He asked the government to take immediate cognisance of this mishap and that in Chattabal area and provide all assistance to the fire-affected households.
Mirwaiz also made a heartfelt appeal from the pulpit of Jama Masjid, urging people to come forward and extend all help to the affected families who are in urgent need of support and relief and help them to rebuild their homes.
