Srinagar, Apr 15: Former Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir Mehbooba Mufti on Wednesday said the growing distress among youth in J&K is pushing many towards drugs, alcohol, and even suicide, stressing the need for direct outreach and support at the grassroots level.
Speaking in Kupwara, she said her party is engaging with young people across districts to understand their problems. She said the aim is to listen, ease their distress, and take their concerns to the government for action.
Mufti said delimitation is inevitable and will take place as per the Centre’s plans. However, she expressed concern over past exercises, alleging unfair distribution of constituencies. She said such practices should not be repeated and called for a fair process.
She also demanded greater representation for women in Parliament and the Assembly, saying their participation must increase in decision-making bodies.
Focusing on grassroots democracy, Mufti urged youth to actively take part in upcoming panchayat and local body elections. She said young people, regardless of political affiliation, should come forward to serve society.
She added that empowering youth at the panchayat level is key to shaping the future.
Taking a dig at Omar Abdullah, she questioned his leadership, saying if he cannot run a government despite having a large number of legislators, it reflects weakness.
Mufti reiterated that addressing youth concerns and ensuring fair governance should remain the priority.
