Srinagar, Jan 13: The Baramulla-Uri national highway was blocked near the N S Bridge on Tuesday afternoon after fresh landslides hit the stretch, bringing traffic to a standstill for nearly two hours and causing widespread inconvenience to commuters.
According to officials, falling debris triggered by ongoing widening work blocked the road, leaving dozens of vehicles stranded on both sides of the highway. The disruption particularly affected patients, students and daily commuters who rely on the vital link connecting Uri with Baramulla.
“This road is a lifeline for us. Patients were stuck in vehicles for hours without any assistance,” said Tanveer Bhat, a commuter, expressing concern over the repeated disruptions.
Several commuters and locals blamed the ongoing two-laning and widening work for frequent blockades, alleging that the project was being executed in a rushed and unscientific manner.
“The widening should be carried out in a planned way so that the highway does not get blocked every other day. Right now, the work is creating more problems than solutions,” said Bashir Ahmad, a local of Garkote village.
Another commuter, Shafiq Ahmad, said that landslides have become a regular occurrence since the widening work began. “Earlier, such blockades were rare, but now we face them regularly. Authorities need to review the execution of the project,” he said.
Traffic movement was later restored after road clearance teams removed the debris from the affected stretch. However, locals have urged the authorities to adopt safer and more scientific methods during the widening work to prevent recurring disruptions on the highway.
