J&K records egg production of 178.7 million in 2022–23

Srinagar, Dec 13: Jammu and Kashmir has reported a total egg production of 178,712,752 during the summer, rainy, and winter seasons across all 20 districts for the year 2022–23, according to the latest Integrated Sample Survey data.

Official figures reveal that the Union Territory’s poultry sector continues to expand steadily, with rural areas serving as the backbone of production.

As per the survey data, during the summer season, rural belts contributed significantly, recording 59,731,987 eggs. In the rainy season, production increased to 61,247,314 eggs, marking the highest seasonal output of the year.

The winter season, traditionally a period of reduced farm activity due to harsh weather conditions, saw production dip slightly to 57,733,452 eggs.

Despite seasonal variations, the cumulative annual production underscores the sector’s resilience and the growing interest among farmers in poultry rearing.

Among the 20 districts, Poonch has emerged as the top egg-producing district with an impressive 23,377,222 eggs. Baramulla followed in second place, registering 19,159,947 eggs, while Kupwara secured the third position with 18,973,397 eggs.

Other districts contributing significantly to the UT’s output include Rajouri, Budgam, Doda, Bandipora, Jammu, Kulgam, Anantnag, Ganderbal, Kathua, Kishtwar, Pulwama, Ramban, Reasi, Samba, Shopian, and Srinagar, highlighting the widespread adoption of poultry farming across diverse terrains.

The rising demand for egg production in Jammu and Kashmir is creating employment opportunities for the people of the union territory. The high demand for local production eggs in the market is also expected to continue in the future.
