Srinagar, Dec 20: Jammu & Kashmir Police on Saturday launched an online tenant verification portal, ‘Kirayedar’, aimed at bridging gaps in tenant reporting that persisted despite enforcement measures, including FIRs against defaulting landlords.
The portal was formally inaugurated for public use by Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Jammu, Joginder Singh, who expressed confidence that the initiative would significantly enhance tenant reporting and verification across the district.
Addressing the gathering, SSP Singh said the move would play a crucial role in strengthening internal security and providing a safer environment for residents of Jammu. “Peace and prosperity can flourish only when every part of the Union Territory is secure,” he said, highlighting the police’s primary responsibility to maintain law and order, particularly in light of past incidents involving anti-social and anti-national elements.
Singh noted that Jammu, the winter capital of Jammu and Kashmir, sees a continuous influx of people from across the UT, especially during the winter season. “Many of them reside in rented accommodations. Additionally, large infrastructure projects in Jammu and adjoining areas have brought labourers, contractors, and technical staff, most of whom stay in rented premises,” he said.
He warned that anti-national elements could exploit this situation by securing rented accommodations under false identities, making tenant verification a critical security requirement. Tenant reporting and verification have been made mandatory, and the district administration has already issued orders in this regard.
However, practical challenges, such as elderly landlords, those living out of station, or those unable to visit police stations due to work commitments, hindered compliance. Reluctance among some people to visit police stations further slowed the process, despite the police registering 12 FIRs against defaulting landlords and conducting over 10,000 tenant verifications.
To address these issues, the SSP said the ‘Kirayedar’ portal has been developed as a proactive, technology-driven solution. The platform allows landlords to report and verify tenants online in a convenient and time-efficient manner.
Significantly, the portal was developed through the collaborative efforts of three students from IIT Jammu and a local youth from Kathua, under the guidance of the SDPO City West Jammu. Describing it as user-friendly and accessible anytime from anywhere, Singh said the portal would serve as an effective communication bridge between landlords and the police, ultimately benefiting the public and strengthening overall security in Jammu.
