Innovation, inclusivity key to transform J&K’s apple sector: Agri Minister

Srinagar, Nov 12: Minister for Agricultural Production, Rural Development & Panchayati Raj, Cooperative and Election Departments, Javid Ahmad Dar on Wednesday called for innovation, sustainability and inclusivity in transforming Jammu and Kashmir’s apple sector. Addressing the 5th Edition of CII J&K Apple Conclave 2025 here, Dar highlighted the government’s pilot initiatives aimed at strengthening the apple industry, including the infusion of advanced technology, establishment of robust market linkages and promotion of sustainable agricultural practices. “Through strategic interventions, we are committed to creating a more resilient and globally competitive apple economy in Jammu and Kashmir," he said. "Our goal is not just to enhance productivity, but also to ensure that the benefits of this transformation reach every farmer and stakeholder in the apple value chain." The minister underscored that sustainability will be at the core of the government’s approach, ensuring that the region’s apple industry thrives while maintaining ecological balance. He stressed the critical role of innovation and technology in streamlining operations and improving market access for local apple producers. The CII J&K Apple Conclave 2025 brought together industry experts, farmers, and stakeholders to discuss the future of the apple sector in Jammu and Kashmir and explore new avenues for growth and collaboration. Among others, Vice Chancellor SKUAST-K, Director Agriculture Kashmir, Director Horticulture Planning and Marketing, representatives of Confederation of Indian Industry and other senior officers were also present on the occasion. Vice Chancellor of SKUAST-Kashmir, Prof Nazir Ahmad Ganai, who was the guest of honour, highlighted the role of education and research in agriculture. He remarked, “Investing in knowledge and technology is crucial for enhancing the productivity of our orchards. Our farmers deserve the tools and training that will allow them to thrive in an increasingly competitive market.” Izhan Javeed, Convener, CII J&K Horticulture & Food Processing Panel, expressed optimism about the sector’s future, stating, “The CII Apple Conclave serves as a vital platform to foster meaningful dialogue among stakeholders and shape the policy roadmap for the future of the apple economy. Sustainability must guide our policies, innovation must drive our growth, and inclusivity must ensure that every stakeholder benefits from this transformation." Dawar Ashraf Mir, Co-Convener, CII J&K Horticulture & Food Processing Panel, added, “It is inspiring to see so many passionate individuals coming together to support the apple industry. Our goal is not only to sustain our heritage but also to innovate and adapt to the changing dynamics of the market. Together, we can create a vibrant future for Kashmir’s apple growers.” The conclave attracted a diverse range of participants, including apple growers, policymakers, researchers, agri-tech innovators, and industry leaders. It served as a premier platform for dialogue and collaboration, fostering discussions on sustainable practices in fruit cultivation, the use of technology, and the promotion of inclusivity in the agricultural sector.
