Local militant recruitment serious concern: Police
Srinagar, May 21: Inspector General of Police (IGP) Kashmir zone Vijay Kumar Friday said local youth are joining militant ranks which is a serious concern. He said they are working very hard to overcome this challenge in the valley.
Speaking to media on sidelines of a pledge taking ceremony on National Anti-Terrorism Day’ at District Police Lines (DPL) Srinagar, Kumar said hey have taken their pledge to fight “terrorism” with more commitment and zeal.
Apart from dealing with anti-militancy activities, and ensuring end of youth recruitment to militant ranks in the valley, police also have to provide a safe and secure environment to people, he said.
The IGP said they pledged to condemn all forms of violence, militancy and its related activities. “Terrorism is threat for everyone including society and leads to property loss, destruction and unending wars,” he said.
Kumar also said police have a duty to strengthen their own organisation and understand their responsibilities towards society.
The IGP said there is need for comprehensive and coordinated efforts by police, security forces, education & sport departments and their families.
“Vast networks of OGWs are busted each passing day and motivators are being tracked down. We have to keep our youth engaged in sports activities, cultural events and other programs and these activities will resume once the prevailing Covid19 situation will calm down, he said.
It is pertinent to mention here, that in 2020, 203 militants including 166 locals, 7 foreigners were killed by security forces while nine surrendered during the past year.
In 2019, 152 militants, including 120 locals, 32 of Pakistan-origin were killed, in 2018, 215 militants were killed by security forces.
Earlier the IGP Kashmir read out the pledge to uphold and promote peace, social harmony and understanding among all fellow beings & fight the forces of disruption threatening human lives and values.
The pledge function was attended by DIG CKR Amit Kumar, SSP Srinagar Sandeep Choudhary and other officers and other officials.
