Mother tongue matters
The
role of mother tongue is very important in the development of a child's social,
personal, and cultural identity. It is the only medium of instruction that is
spoken to a child until he starts to understand the world of different languages.
Over the years, Kashmir language is losing its sheen because of the fact that
our younger generation is going away from it. We may ask, who is to blame for this?
Despite the fact that there has been a lot of activism around the topic of
reviving the Kashmiri language in the last decade or so, the actual progress
made so far has been dismal to say the least. In the past, a number of
organizations tried their best to create awareness among the general public
about the importance and preservation of the mother tongue. But unfortunately
some nepotists used these organizations for their personal benefits only. It is
a fact that many forums have been working for the uplift of Kashmiri language
in Kashmir and beyond. There are no two opinions about it being a genuine and
laudable effort. After all, no conscious nation would cause its mother tongue
to lapse into oblivion. People must be organized in order to get things done at
a systemic level. It was seen as a positive outcome of different efforts when Kashmiri
was included in the school curriculum. It was an achievement for those who are
working for the cause of promoting Kashmiri language. For all such efforts we
need to praise those who make efforts in this direction. But having said all
this, one would like these organizations and groups to go beyond the demands of
getting Kashmiri a place in the government based setups. Language is a theme that can not be confined
in any state-based structure. It always belongs to life and people. On this
count there seems to be less activism. Kashmiri literature is nowhere near the
literature that is available in other languages. There is a dire need to revive
the classical works in Kashmiri language and for that matter these works need
to get compiled, edited and published. In
order to save the Kashmiri language from getting extinct, the government needs
to come up with some substantial measures that can help in preserving our
mother tongue. Also, our educational institutions need to be more conscious
about Kashmir language and must inculcate its importance among the students so
that they are not deprived of their own mother tongue. Kashmiri language has
been the part and parcel of our culture and civilization since ages and sincere
efforts are needed to revive its past glory.
