Police intensifies surveillance in Srinagar

Srinagar, April 21: The Jammu and Kashmir Police have set up more surveillance points in the city to avert any militancy related incidents.


A senior police officer told Rising Kashmir that they are strengthening the security surveillance grid in Srinagar to avert major security lapses in future.

"We have set up multiple surveillance points across the city and security agencies are keenly monitoring the situation. Work on these points started earlier this month and we will ensure our presence at these key locations," the officer said.

In this regard, security agencies are setting up bunkers near Hanuman Temple at Amira Kadal, at Magarmal Bagh crossing and some other vital locations.

The officer said apart from these bunkers, deployment is being reviewed each day to ensure a peaceful atmosphere in the city.

Over the past three months, Srinagar city has witnessed three major militant attacks in which over six security officers were killed.

On April 1, a policeman guarding BJP leader in Aribagh, Nowgam area was killed by militants and took away a cop's rifle from the spot as well.

Earlier on March 25, three CRPF personnel including an assistant sub-inspector (ASI) were killed in a militant attack in the Lawaypora area.

Similarly on Feb 19, two policemen were shot dead by suspected militants at Baghat Barzulla. Hours after the attack, police had also released  CCTV footage of the attack.

Following the attacks in the city, the security agencies set up nakas, checking points as a precautionary measure.

On March 13, Srinagar Police released a lookout notice which mentioned names of nine most-wanted militants, in which seven were active in Srinagar and its adjoining areas.

Earlier this month, the Inspector General of Police  (IGP) said there were six militants active in Srinagar and police are working on all leads to neutralise or arrest them.

A top CRPF official said they are coordinating with police and the present somehow situation is peaceful as compared to past months.

"People are busy in their routine work and at each place in a city our people are deployed to ensure a peaceful atmosphere in the city," the officer said.
