Ganderbal, Jan 13: District Mining Officer (DMO) Ganderbal, Murtaza Ahmad, on Saturday said that the installation of GPS tracking devices on all vehicles and machinery engaged in mineral extraction and transportation has been made mandatory in the district. Speaking to the media, the DMO said the government had initially set December 15 as the deadline for the installation of GPS devices. “However, later we came to know there were some issues, so the date was extended to January,” he said. “With only two days left, every vehicle involved in mineral transportation must install the GPS device without delay,” Ahmad said, adding that any vehicle operating without GPS after the deadline would be treated as illegal. He cautioned transporters that vehicles without GPS can be intercepted at any time. “There are several police stations, many field employees, and a multi-department task force active across the district. Vehicles can be stopped for valid e-challan checks, and if the operator fails to present the required documents, the vehicle will be considered illegal,” he said. The DMO stressed that the GPS is crucial for bringing transparency and strengthening monitoring mechanisms in mineral extraction and transportation. “There are clear government orders in the public domain. The deadline has already been extended a couple of times and cannot be extended further,” he said. Ahmad urged all stakeholders, especially transporters, to ensure compliance and avoid legal action. “To make the system progressive and efficient, installing GPS in vehicles is extremely important,” he added.
