Srinagar, Mar 21: Govt. Medical College Handwara is set to launch endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP), a specialized procedure combining upper GI endoscopy and X-ray to diagnose and treat bile/pancreatic duct issues, such as gallstones, strictures, or tumors.
Principal GMC Handwara, Prof. (Dr.) Khurshid Ahmad Wani, said that the ERCP service will be started soon and it would become the first medical college in north Kashmir to have the facility.
“We are progressing for ERCP. We are sending one staff member for the training to SKIMS Soura. It is an important facility,” he said.
The newly established medical college also started endoscopy and colonoscopy services a month ago. It has performed 17 endoscopies and 10 colonoscopy procedures. The two facilities are safe, minimally invasive procedures used to visualize and treat gastrointestinal (GI) issues.
Prof. Wani also said that GMC Handwara has an MoU with GMC Baramulla to give bronchoscopy training to its staff and it will be starting bronchoscopy service soon.
“GMC Handwara has also become the first hospital in north Kashmir to have a separate OPD and IPD Digital Radiography (DR) x-ray plant, an advanced form of x-ray imaging,” the principal said.
Officials said it has become the only peripheral medical college in JK that has Immunohistochemistry (IHC) in pathology, a diagnostic technique that uses labeled antibodies to detect specific antigens in tissue sections. It is primarily used to diagnose cancer types etc.
The medical college is also set to launch dialysis services soon, marking a step in strengthening healthcare access as specialised staff training is underway to ensure quality patient care.
It will start the dialysis centre under Pradhan Mantri National Dialysis Programme (PMNDP) that provides cost-effective dialysis services to kidney patients at District Hospitals across India.
Officials said it will be an eight-bedded facility, with two sessions conducted daily, catering to around 16 patients a day, and is planned to function round the clock.
Officials said the new facility is expected to ease the burden on CHC Kupwara and GMC Baramulla. With this, GMC Handwara will become the third centre after GMC Baramulla and CHC Kupwara to provide dialysis services in North Kashmir.
