Budgam, Jan 19: Budgam district has witnessed intensified action against illegal mining, with the Geology and Mining Department collecting ₹826.54 lakh and seizing 581 vehicles involved in illegal activities during the year 2025.
According to official figures available with Rising Kashmir, the department imposed penalties amounting to ₹96.99 lakh on violators during 2025 and registered 54 FIRs across the district. The enforcement drive reflects a sustained effort to curb unauthorised extraction of minerals.
Official data further revealed that during the financial year 2024–2025, the department collected ₹999.83 lakh as revenue, seized 475 vehicles, imposed penalties of ₹85.45 lakh, and registered 62 FIRs against those involved in illegal mining.
Similarly, during 2023–2024, the department seized 403 vehicles, imposed penalties amounting to ₹77.02 lakh, and registered 31 FIRs. Revenue collection during that period stood at ₹1,278.59 lakh across the district.
District Mineral Officer (DMO) Budgam, Nadeem Ahmad, told Rising Kashmir that the department has adopted a zero-tolerance policy towards illegal mining and that strict action will continue against offenders.
“Illegal mining is usually carried out during late-night hours, when people are asleep, and in remote locations that are difficult to access at night,” he said.
He added that the Geology and Mining Department, in coordination with Budgam Police, conducts regular search operations at identified hotspots where illegal mining activities are suspected. “We are taking strict action as per law against those involved,” he said.
The DMO said that all vehicles found involved in illegal mining are seized. “We have also installed GPS devices on 162 vehicles used for mineral transportation in the district to ensure better monitoring and accountability,” he said.
Nadeem Ahmad said that department officials conduct daily inspections at vulnerable sites and take necessary action to prevent illegal mining. “Our enforcement teams are on the ground every day to ensure compliance with mining laws,” he added.
The sustained crackdown, officials said, aims not only to protect natural resources but also to ensure lawful mining practices across Budgam district.
