Leh, Dec 18: Lieutenant Governor of Ladakh, Kavinder Gupta said that the start of geo-thermal heating at the Primary Health Centre (PHC) Thiksay in Ladakh is an important beginning in the energy sector of the region and will guide similar projects in other parts of the country.
Speaking to reporters, the LG said Ladakh is emerging as a testing ground for new and clean energy ideas, adding that the results achieved so far have been encouraging. He said the power being supplied through thermal energy will act as a model for future renewable energy projects.
"Ladakh has huge potential in renewable energy, including solar, wind and geothermal power. The administration is making efforts to reduce power costs by using clean energy sources, especially in offices and public places where electricity consumption is high," he said.
Gupta said the initiative is a major step towards promoting renewable energy and is in line with the Prime Minister’s vision of moving the country towards green power. "More such projects will be taken up in the future to benefit the people of the region," he added.
Referring to solar energy, the LG said Ladakh receives sunlight for most of the year, making it highly suitable for solar power generation. He said surveys and pilot projects conducted in different areas have shown positive results, and expansion work is already underway.
Gupta further said that the administration is planning to generate around 1.5 gigawatts of power in the coming years, which will make Ladakh power-secure and also help in supplying electricity to other regions.
The geo-thermal heating system at PHC Thiksay is expected to provide a warm and comfortable environment for patients and staff, especially during the long winter season, while also contributing to environmental protection.
